Hydrogen For Dummies
Hydrogen, with the symbol ‘H’ holds pride of place as the first element on the periodic table. A colourless, odourless, tasteless, gaseous substance that is the simplest, smallest, lightest, hexagonal-shaped structure of the family of noble gases. Under ordinary conditions, hydrogen gas is a loose aggregation of hydrogen molecules, each consisting of a pair of atoms, a diatomic molecule, H2, which under normal conditions exists primarily in its di-atomic form as molecular hydrogen (H2 gas). It’s what powers the sun by fusion to produce helium!
But what is this all-important nano-molecule we have come to know as Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is produced in the same way that plants convert sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into food and oxygen; a system called ‘photocatalytic-water-splitting’ converts sunlight and water into Hydrogen ~ a process often referred to as ‘artificial photosynthesis’.
